Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems, but it is largely preventable. At Purple Rain Dental Clinic, we help our patients build habits that keep their teeth strong and cavity-free. Here are practical steps you can take.
Brush Twice a Day
Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste—once in the morning and once before bed. Use a soft-bristled brush and spend at least two minutes covering all surfaces. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
Floss Daily
Flossing removes plaque and food particles between teeth where a brush cannot reach. Making flossing a daily habit significantly reduces the risk of decay and gum disease.
Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Sugar feeds the bacteria that produce acid and cause cavities. Limit sweets, fizzy drinks, and sticky snacks. When you do consume them, try to brush or rinse with water afterward.
Eat a Balanced Diet
Foods rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins support strong teeth and gums. Include dairy, leafy greens, and crunchy fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Use Fluoride
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps repair early decay. Use fluoride toothpaste and consider a fluoride treatment at your dentist if recommended.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Regular check-ups and professional cleanings can catch early signs of decay and remove tartar that brushing alone cannot. We recommend at least two visits a year for most patients.
